EYEVISOR™

The Dept of Optometry & Visual Science is internationally renowned for its research in the development of colour vision technology and techniques. Such research has lead to the development of novel approaches to testing visual performance and ocular health including colour vision testing and vision loss due to disease. The Dept has attracted significant interest and funding from the Research Councils, the Wellcome Trust, Civil Aviation Authority, Moorfields NHS Trust, Carl Zeiss and Pfizer.

Professor David Crabb, Dr Steve Gruppetta, Haogang Zhu and Nicholas Smith in the Department are currently developing a vision testing tool, EyeVisor™, which is a compact platform for delivering a large number of diagnostic tests, including early detection of glaucoma and diabetes. Having won a £40k Emerald Award grant from the London Development Agency (LDA), a prototype of the tool has been built which will undergo clinical testing before going to market. Potential customers include high street opticians, primary care trust and private health care providers. EyeVisor™ can undertake several vision tests that trained opticians have traditionally been required to undertake on separate apparatus, thus eliminated the need to large scale, expensive vision testing units. Due to its compact size and low unit cost EyeVisor™ is fully portable and can be operated by non-clinical trained specialists it is hope that the device will permit its use in remote environments in the developing world.

DR STEVE GRUPPETTA, RCUK ACADEMIC FELLOW, SCHOOL OF COMMUNITY & HEALTH SCIENCES

Steve obtained a BSc(Hons) in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Malta in 2000 and then joined the Photonics Group at Imperial College London as a PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Chris Dainty. He then pursued his research in retinal imaging and physiological optics at the Observatory of Paris and at City University. He is currently a Research Council UK Academic Fellow at City University. Research interests include novel techniques in retinal imaging, retinal image processing, Adaptive Optics, dynamics of human ocular aberrations and of the tear film layer.
