CORPORATE VENTURING
-------------------------------
"...is the process of two companies entering into a mutually beneficial partnership. Usually in this form of relationship the larger of the two companies will invest either money or goods and services into the smaller company in return for access to technology or skills held by the smaller.” http://www.venture-capital.adopto-finance.com/glossary.html

OPEN INNOVATION
-----------------------
"NESTA is about maximising the UK's capacity for Innovation. We know from our research and experience of investing in early stage companies, that open networks can increase a company's innovation potential. What excites us about Open Innovation is that innovation happens through collaboration, rather than in isolation." Roland Harwood, Project Leader NESTA Connect.

Reference books/authors:

"Open Innovation: Researching a New Paradigm" by Henry Chesbrough, Wim Vanhaverbeke and Joel West. Open Innovation describes an emergent model of innovation in which firms draw on research and development that may lie outside their own boundaries. In some cases, such as open source software, this research and development can take place in a non-proprietary manner. http://www.amazon.com/Open-Innovation-Researching-New-Paradigm/dp/0199290725

"Democratizing Innovation" by Eric von Hippel. Innovation is rapidly becoming democratised. Users, aided by improvements in computer and communications technology, increasingly can develop their own new products and services. These innovating users - both individuals and firms - often freely share their innovations with others, creating user-innovation communities and a rich intellectual commons. In Democratizing Innovation, Eric von Hippel looks closely at this emerging user-centred innovation system. The trend toward democratised innovation can be seen in software and information products - most notably in the free and open-source software movement - but also in physical products. http://www.amazon.com/Democratizing-Innovation-Eric-von-Hippel/dp/0262002744

NESTA CONNECT
---------------------
NESTA (The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts): http://www.nesta.org.uk.

Open and collaborative approaches to innovation are on the rise. Books, articles and conferences are being developed around helping us all find new ideas and partners for collaborative innovation. We aim to generate new insights into innovation. We'll do this by testing and supporting unique or unexpected collaborations between different disciplines, organisations and places.

Key strands of our work will focus on the principles of open innovation, user-led innovation, open source innovation, and collective intelligence. We're developing a series of practical projects that explore how innovation can be stimulated by collaboration between individuals, businesses and organisations. This will generate insight and learning in three key areas:

ORGANISATION - value or supply chain innovation between different types of organisation. For example, linking corporates, suppliers, universities and consumers.

DISCIPLINE - bringing together researchers from different disciplines to review and solve specific problems. For example, we may do this through our Crucible programme for post-doctoral researchers.

PLACE - we want to find out if collaboration (on and offline) is influenced by where people live. In particular, we're keen to explore the impact of the emerging social networking culture enabled by the web on the future of work, education, arts, media and entrepreneurship.

We plan to launch NESTA Connect in May 2007. In the meantime, we are very keen to talk to any potential partners about our plans and opportunities for collaboration. Please contact us as at connect@nesta.org.uk. NESTA Connect: http://www.nesta.org.uk/programmes/connect.aspx.
